B57-12-GN: 800mm operating distance and model comparisons

Hi Support Team,

Is it possible to extend the operating distance of the B57-12-GN to 310-800mm?

Also, why don’t the B57-12 GN & BL models have different operating distances like the B57-4?

Thank you,
Pedro

Dear Pedro,

We have the B57-12/700-N/3-GN model, which has a longer operating distance (600mm – 800mm). However, the total operating span is still limited to 200 mm. Would this be suitable for you?

Best wishes,
Grisha

That’s basically an optical principle that causes this difference: the longer the focal length, the less depth of field you have.

What is your required view field and distance in your application?

I noticed that the B57-4/350-BL and B57-4/350-GN have the same optical specs but different operating distances. Because of this, I assumed it would be a similar case for the B57-12 models.

Since I’m preparing a demo, I’ll have to either adjust my setup or use a different model.

Thanks for the help!

Ah, yes, the difference between the -BL and -GN models is the following:

  • -BL models use monochrome stereo sensors and a blue projection LED
    • this is our standard stereo setup, where we can add filters for the blue LED spectrum of the projection on the stereo camera. But the diffuse illumination can only capture monochrome images of the scene.
  • -GN models use an RGB sensor in combination with a green projection LED.
    • This gives you nice RGB images to texture your point cloud, but to let red/green/blue passing to the sensors, we can obviously not add any narrow filters for the projection light on the camera, which results in less robustness against environmental light. Therefore the camera selector clips the working range for -GN models to 800mm.
    • For some narrow view fields or little environmental light, the -GN models might work for longer distances, but that’s certainly something you need to try out then. For that you also manually need to switch off ClipToWorkingRange then.
